Teochew Porridge is something I often crave when I'm slightly under the weather. But I can have it anytime too, as it's the best way to try out multiple interesting dishes at once. And I'm always missing my Teochew grandmother's cooking as she's not staying with us in KL. Hong Lim Teochew Porridge is one of the restaurants we like to visit for the porridge. Here's some of the dishes we ordered during one of our visits. Clockwise: Kangkung, Chai Po Omelette (preserved radish), Fried eggplant, Pork trotter vinegar (strangely a Hakka dish made it into Teochew Porridge restaurant, but not complaining), Sambal petai (another non Teochew dish), Braised Pig Ears.I have always been hesitant to try petai because of its famous name: Stink bean. But something made me order this and it was actually pretty good. With some kick from the sambal, and the faint distinctive aroma of the petai. That went well with the porridge. It doesn't matter that this was not teochew. It's a good version of Pork trotter vinegar dish nonetheless, with just enough sweetness and tanginess. And plenty of collagen! Yum.I love the Teochew styled braised dishes here, they are all pretty good, with aroma from 5 spice, salted soy bean and soy sauce. These pieces of pig ears specially provided a lovely crunch as well as the tender bits. Delicious. The rest of the dishes were ok. The porridge is done traditional way, watery with the rice grains still intact. The ultimate comfort food. continue reading

continue reading

White PorridgeThe dishes I chose: salted vegetable, Japanese touhu, fried luncheon meat, Chicken mermite Restaurant Hong Lim Porridge located at SS2, Petaling Jaya, is famous with their porridge. The porridge is quite watery, which I not really like it. Overall the rice is cook well, keep some frangrance of rice. There are various dish you can choose to eat with porridge. For all the dish I chose, the taste is quite average, Salted vegetable is not that fresh( seem like cook and left for a period already), quite satisfy taste of chicken mermite; It's sweet and the chicken is tender. continue reading
