。 continue reading

one of the main course in hanare is the nodoguro or grilled fishit is very small fish with not much meat so you may want to order something else to go with thisbest eaten with rice this fish is grilled till the skin turns almost black but inside the meat is still white and without the burnt tastethis fish is served with lemon slice in case some find it too fishy and also some grated ginger for added taste continue reading

It's been awhile since a new Japanese restaurant possessed the potential to beguile our sushi-satiated city. But thanks to Hanare, the long wait is finally over. The highlight here is "chinmi" _ hard-to-find seafood delicacies that are an acquired taste. One perfect example: "bakurai," the pickled innards of sea squirts (oceanic filter feeders). Pungently savory and pulpy, this causes customers to either swoon or sprint away screaming. Shirako (cod sperm sacs). Rather reminiscent of pig brains in both taste and texture, but with a creamier, milkier feel. Always a treat to taste this in KL (so far, we've only had it at Cilantro, Kampachi and the now-defunct Seki Tei at Holiday Villa Subang). Nama karasumi. This salted fish roe is tasty, but not extraordinarily memorable. Nevertheless, all these items are ideal for whetting the appetite before a full dinner. Tamano Hikari Junmai Ginjyo (15 percent alkie). continue reading

This is one of the few weird dish I've ever eaten. Not to say they are really weird, just that I seldom will order and you seldom can see it too. There is a pair of baby squid, snail, tofu and sesame tofu. The black sesame tofu is so strong of sesame fragrance. Once you put that into your mouth, you can immediately taste the sesame surrounding your mouth and it's like it won't disappear. continue reading

I was very fortunate to have won a contest organized by Openrice and thus got myself an invitation to dine in at Hanare for 2 Dried salmon. Very crunchy and I think it tasted very much like "bakkwa", but I couldn't bring myself to have a few more pieces as it was too salty to me. Snail! This was part of the Zenzai that was served to us along with homemade Goma Tofu (sesame tofu), egg tofu & Seasonal Baby Squid (April - June only). I never thought I would have the chance to eat a snail but I did! In fact, it took me a lot of courage to eat this big snail on my first try. Surprisingly, it was better than I expected. Texture was somewhat similar to that of a squid.Seasonal beef claypot rice in which the rice was served together with beef was absolutely delicious! Ankake (donburi served with shrimp & chicken). Sweet in taste, rich in ingredients. Snapper sperm sac. I ate this without knowing what it was. To me it looked like and tasted like mangosteen except that it wasn't sweet :|Handmade mochi served with Japanese pear cooked in wine, strawberry & vanilla ice cream. Loved how I could eat ice cream with mochi together! Double sweetness at one go. continue reading
