Gurney drive is probably the first place that pops up into one's mind when asked where to go for street food in Penang. True to it's claim, the place is packed with hawker stalls selling a variety of street food that you can think possibly think of. The eatery is divided into two sections, one is chinese hawker stalls (muslims might want to becareful and ask first for their ingredients before ordering) and the other is the malay/indian section which is without a doubt halal. I went there for supper at around 9 pm to try out the famous pasembur, and sadly it was a let down. The indian/mamak push cart is laden with all sorts of deep fried goods that make your mouth water upon sight. I ordered a huge plate of pasembur with deep fried squid to share with my sister and my total came up to RM37. I do not mind the expensive price as much as the cold, tough kuihs of pasembur. The kuihs/condiments of the pasembur seemed to have been fried way earlier that day. The squid I can only describe as eating a piece of rubber. It was cold and hard. The gravy of the pasembur is also too sweet for my liking and did not help the taste of the weak pasembur at all. It might just be me having a bad batch of pasembur, probably others have better luck at this place, but it is safe to say that I will not be returning. 繼續閱讀

Indian pasembur is nice to eat when you just want something light. The pasembur has lots of bean sprout, some crackers, and also tauhu, and an egg in it. The peanut sauce is the main part where make it different from other pasembur stall. This pasembur has very thick peanut sauce. When you eat it, you can smell the aroma of the peanuts. It taste sweet and definitely you will ask for more. 繼續閱讀

Next to Gurney Plaza Penang is the Gurney Drive Hawker Center which is very famous among tourists. Food prices at the hawker centre is rather expensive but it is still busy with diners at night. At the stall 61 in the hawker centre, very nice pasembur is available. There is a wide variety of base ingredients to choose from such as prawn fritters, fried bean curd, fish balls, fish cake, fried octopus, fried crab, etc. etc.PasemburThe end product of the pasembur consisting of prawn fritter, bean curd, fish cake and shredded cucumber drenched in some orange-ish sauce looked a little unpleasant but tasted very nice. The thick orange-ish sauce had a combination of sweet, spicy and nutty taste, indeed its taste combines the shadow of chilli sauce and tomato sauce. 繼續閱讀
